  He lifted the paper, flicked it again, and stared at a smaller article on the next page.

  Wisps of smoke curled from his nostrils as he skimmed the lede:

  An appeal for the expedition of execution was denied for Amanda Walthers, 36. On the anniversary of the crime for which she was convicted and sentenced, she reiterated her pleas to the governor requesting a speedy process taking her to the death chamber. Walthers insists she was absolutely in her right mind when she killed her four children, aged 3 to 8. Her husband was unavailable for comment.

  The edges of the newsprint crisped underneath his fingertips, leaving perfectly round circles of flat black just before the paper fluttered, single pages separating to settle on the empty seat, coffee bubbling in the mug.
